HACKNEY GARDEN

The Place:
Situated in the beating heart of east London where every inch of green space is precious is this mid-century terraced home.

The Brief:
The young couple have recently completed an extension on the back of the property with a large picture window which frames the back garden.

Sadly the view is currently a bit of a building site! They want to create a wildlife-friendly sanctuary in the city that looks great year round with greenery always on show through the window. They are also overlooked on all sides and want some more privacy, as well as space to lay out on a sun lounger and space to entertain friends.

In their front garden they want to grow some of their own veg which can be shared with the locals to create a sense of community.

The Design:
Out back, we’ve added generous planting beds filled with sun loving, wildlife friendly flowers. Bamboo is used as an informal screen blocking the view from the houses on the other side of the road. We’ve chosen large leaved shrubs such as Fatsia Japonica and Textrapanax which create a feeling of being in a jungle and stay in leaf year round. At the end of the garden a little decked terrace is hidden by lush planting, there is a cantilever bench to maximise space and fit with the contemporary feel.

The front garden also gets a lot of sun throughout the day so we’re adding a gravel mulch and filling the beds with drought-tolerant Mediterranean planting. The couple enjoy to cycle so there is a tidy bike shed to keep their chosen modes of transport safe. Three large veg beds fill the largest portion of the front garden, they will produce enough veg to feed the couple throughout the growing season and have some spare to share!
